An internationally recognized expert on multi-stakeholder partnerships with more than 25 years of experience, James brings his deep expertise in partnership development and execution and technology for international development to SSG’s government and private sector clients around the world. Prior to joining SSG, he was Senior Director of Global Strategic Partnerships for the Education Group at Microsoft, where he led a team that was responsible for building partnerships with publishers, education technology companies, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and international organizations such as the UN and World Bank. Between 2006 and 2008 James served as Vice President of Marketing and Communications for World Learning, an international NGO focused on educational exchange and international development. He also held a number of positions at Microsoft between 1999 and 2006, working on consumer technology products, and digital access programs to bring technology to emerging markets. James is a frequent speaker on issues related to public-private partnerships in education and international development. He serves on the board of directors of Pact, a global NGO working on health, livelihood and environmental projects in 35 countries. He lives in Seattle.
As Director of Strategic Partnerships, James is heading up SSG’s new West Coast office, located in Seattle. He’s responsible for building our practice in ICT for international development, with a focus on applying new technologies (big data, the Internet of Things, last-mile connectivity) to SSG’s work around the world; driving partnerships with technology companies as they move into frontier markets; and developing links between technology companies, NGOs, donors and academic institutions to support our work.
James holds a BS in Journalism (Cum Laude) from Ohio University and holds a partnership broker certification from the Partnership Brokers’ Association.
Living in Seattle, James takes full advantage of everything that the Pacific Northwest has to offer for outdoor activities – skiing, cycling, running, hiking, kayaking, camping – as well as the great restaurants and live music scene in Seattle. His wife, Celeste, is the head of graphics and design at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and his daughter, Olivia, will be a freshman in high school next year.
